Simone Monasebian - Chief Program Officer of Sanctuary for Families
An accomplished attorney and administrator, Simone Monasebian is the Chief Program Officer for the gender violence survivor service provider and advocacy organization Sanctuary for Families. Under Simone Monasebian’s direction, Sanctuary for Families helps adults and children establish safe and stable lives after enduring domestic violence, human trafficking, and other forms of abuse.
Before assuming this position, Ms. Monasebian worked on important human rights cases for the Special Court for Sierra Leone (SCSL) and the United Nations (UN) International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR). She addressed child soldier cases in Sierra Leone as the Principal defender for the SCSL, war crimes cases at the ICTR, and led a range of criminal justice reform efforts to protect women's rights and marginalized populations as the director of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime in New York. Prior to that, she was a criminal defense attorney fighting the war on drugs and war on terrorism. She also possesses considerable experience as an Adjunct Law Professor, on air commentator for several media outlets, and has published several articles on criminal law matters.
Outside of the professional arena, Simone Monasebian stays physically active by kayaking and snowshoeing, and she also enjoys poetry and music. Her favorite musical genres include old school R&B/hip-hop. Before her career in law and administration, she was one of the first journalists to cover hip-hop culture for a national audience.
